Herringbone parquet flooring in a Dubai living room

What Is Parquet Flooring?

Parquet flooring, sometimes spelled parkay, is real wood laid in geometric patterns rather than straight planks, with classic looks like herringbone, chevron and basketweave. This parquet wood flooring comes in a range of species and tones. It comes in solid or engineered wood and adds character and value to a room. Urban Flooring supplies and fits parquet across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Parquet is part of our wider wood flooring range, distinguished by the pattern: the same oak or walnut becomes a feature floor through the way the blocks are cut and laid.

Parquet Patterns

The pattern is what makes parquet. Herringbone sets rectangular blocks at 90 degrees in a broken zigzag. Chevron cuts the block ends at an angle so the points meet in a continuous V. Basketweave groups blocks into squares for a woven look. Beyond the three, brick-bond, Versailles panels and bordered designs are set out to the room.

Parquet comes in oak, walnut and brown wood tones, plus grey, dark and white finishes to suit any scheme, so the pattern and the tone are two separate choices.

Herringbone parquet pattern

Herringbone

The timeless zigzag Rectangular blocks set at 90 degrees in a broken zigzag, the timeless parquet look. This herringbone parquet flooring, a classic herringbone wood floor, works in modern and classic interiors alike, and oak herringbone flooring is a perennial favourite. The diagonal lines make a room feel larger.
Chevron parquet pattern

Chevron

The continuous V Blocks cut at an angle so the points meet in a continuous V, a sleeker, more contemporary line than herringbone, favoured in modern and luxury interiors.
Basketweave parquet pattern

Basketweave

Soft and traditional Squares of wood woven in a basket effect, a softer, traditional pattern good for period rooms and feature spaces.

Other Patterns & Custom Designs

Brick-bond, Versailles panels, borders and mixed-tone designs for a bespoke floor, set out to your room.

Solid and Engineered Parquet

Parquet comes in two constructions. The pattern is the same; how the block is built is what differs. Solid parquet is milled from one piece of timber, sands back many times, and belongs in interiors kept under steady air conditioning. Engineered parquet has a real-wood top layer on a stable core, which copes better with UAE humidity and is the version normally supplied ready for underfloor heating.

Solid parquet wood blocks

Solid Parquet

Premium and refinishable Solid wood blocks, premium and sandable many times, best kept in controlled, air-conditioned interiors. This solid wood flooring is the traditional choice for a parquet floor that lasts generations.
Engineered parquet board

Engineered Parquet

Stable and UAE-friendly A real-wood top layer on a stable core, more resistant to UAE humidity and air conditioning, and compatible with underfloor heating, often the practical choice. See our engineered wood flooring page, or read the full engineered vs solid wood comparison.

The two constructions are covered by different European standards. Solid parquet elements fall under EN 13226, which sets out dimensions and tolerances for tongued and grooved solid blocks. Multi-layer engineered parquet falls under EN 13489, which additionally governs the wear layer thickness on top of the core. That wear layer is what decides how many times an engineered floor can be sanded, so it is worth asking for.

Parquet Formats

Individual wood blocks for traditional hand-laying, pre-assembled parquet tiles and panels for faster fitting, and plank-parquet for a larger-scale pattern. Parquet tiles here means pre-assembled wood panels, not carpet tiles. We advise which format suits your pattern and budget.

Why Choose Parquet

Parquet is chosen for the pattern, not the material. The same oak that reads as ordinary in straight planks becomes a feature floor when it is cut into blocks and laid in a geometric run. It is real wood, so solid versions sand back for decades, and the busy pattern hides everyday dust and minor marks better than a plain floor.

Where Parquet Works

A premium patterned floor in the right rooms, and the wrong choice in wet ones. We are upfront about both. At home it belongs in living rooms, majlis, dining rooms and bedrooms. On the commercial side it suits hotels, boutiques, reception areas and retail, where a patterned floor is part of the impression. It stays out of bathrooms, wet areas and kitchens with frequent spills, as all real wood does.

Use with careAs with all real wood, we keep parquet out of bathrooms and wet areas, and suggest a waterproof floor there instead. For the same herringbone look in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry, see our SPC herringbone flooring.

Parquet Flooring Prices in Dubai

Parquet price depends on the wood, the construction and the pattern. Intricate patterns like herringbone and chevron need more cutting and precision, so they cost a little more to fit than straight-lay. As an indicative supply-and-fit guide:

Pattern / TypePer sqm (AED)Per sqft (AED approx)
Basketweave (engineered)80 to 1207.4 to 11.1
Herringbone (engineered)110 to 16010.2 to 14.9
Chevron120 to 18011.1 to 16.7
Solid / premium & custom180 to 40016.7 to 37.2

Pattern fitting adds roughly AED 30 to 70/sqm in labour over straight-lay, and patterns use more material, around 10 to 12% extra for herringbone and more for Versailles. Underfloor-heating-ready fitting adds about AED 15 to 25/sqm.

How We Fit Parquet Flooring

With parquet, the set-out is everything. A pattern that starts even and square is what separates a good floor from a great one. Fitting runs in five stages: pattern and wood advice, a free site measurement with a written quote, acclimatisation while the wood adjusts to your home, set-out and installation with centre lines marked before a single block is bonded, then sanding, sealing and care guidance on handover.

Parquet Flooring FAQs

Is parquet flooring a good choice for Dubai homes?

Yes. Parquet brings a premium, characterful look that suits villas, apartments and hotels alike, and engineered parquet in particular copes well with UAE humidity and air conditioning. We help you choose the right pattern, wood and construction during a free measurement.

What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?

Herringbone uses rectangular blocks set at 90 degrees, forming a broken zigzag, the traditional look. Chevron cuts the blocks at an angle so the ends meet in a continuous V, a sleeker, modern line. Chevron needs more precise cutting and takes around 20% longer to fit, so it usually costs a little more.

Is parquet solid or engineered wood, and which suits the UAE?

Parquet comes in both. Solid parquet is premium and refinishable but needs controlled indoor conditions. Engineered parquet has a stable core that resists humidity and air conditioning and works with underfloor heating, which makes it the practical choice for many UAE homes. We advise on both.

How much does parquet flooring cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, supply and fit runs from around AED 80/sqm (about AED 7.4/sqft) for engineered basketweave, AED 110 to 180/sqm for herringbone and chevron, and up to AED 400/sqm for solid or custom designs. Pattern fitting adds to the labour. Request a free measurement.

Can parquet flooring go over underfloor heating?

Yes, engineered parquet is well suited to underfloor heating because its stable core handles the temperature changes without gapping or buckling. Solid wood is riskier over heating. We use a full-adhesive method for heated floors and confirm suitability during the site visit.

Which parquet pattern suits small rooms?

Herringbone and chevron both work well in small rooms: their diagonal lines draw the eye outward and make the space feel larger. Lighter wood tones add to the effect. Basketweave and large panels suit bigger rooms better. We advise on the right pattern for each space.

Can parquet be sanded and refinished?

Solid parquet can be sanded and refinished several times, refreshing the surface over decades. Engineered parquet can usually be refinished once or twice, depending on its top-layer thickness. Refinishing brings a tired parquet floor back to life, which we can advise on.

How long does parquet flooring last?

Solid parquet lasts for decades and can outlive the building, because it sands back many times. Engineered parquet typically gives 20 to 30 years, set by how thick its wear layer is. Both depend far more on the set-out and the bonding than on the wood itself, which is why we mark centre lines before laying a single block.

Do you supply only, or also install?

Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-installation company. One team handles pattern, wood and finish advice, measurement, acclimatisation and precise pattern fitting, so there is a single point of accountability. Supply-only orders are possible if you have your own fitter. Free site measurement comes as standard.
